The Ocean Course
|
 |
Hilton Head’s first golf course
has been personally redesigned
by Mark McCumber, emphasis on
the traditional and classic
principles of course design. He
has built interest, challenge
and strategy into the course
while preserving the natural
beauty of Sea Pines. This course
is a "Certified Audubon
Cooperative Sanctuary," only the
fourth in South Carolina & 187th
in the world to achieve this
designation. No matter how many
times you've played the Ocean
Course, your next round will be
a completely new experience. The
varying sets of tees and the
placement of hazards ensure that
the course is challenging but
playable for golfers of every
skill level.
Says McCumber,
"Playability and golf strategy
are basic to how we design our
courses. The challenge is to
match these considerations with
aesthetics and the natural
environment."

Palmetto Dunes Arthur Hills
|
 |
Opened for play
in the spring of 1986, the
Arthur Hills Course is one of
the most distinctive layouts in
the area.
The Hills
site was blessed with continuous
lines of dunes and thick stands
of palmettos. Arthur Hills took
full advantage of the natural
dunes and created an extremely
rolling layout with dramatic
elevation changes.
The Hills
Course has a unique seaside
character, with rough and
fairway bunkers notably absent.
The dune lines continue into the
greens, thus creating undulating
surfaces. Off-balance lies and
ocean breezes are a constant
challenge, and lagoons come into
play on 10 holes.
The Hills
Course greens were extensively
renovated during the Summer of
1995. As a result, the course
now offers superior,
tournament-quality putting
surfaces year-round. These
improvements have solidified the
Hills Course as one of the
island's best golf experiences.

Palmetto Dunes Fazio
|
 |
Having appeared
on Golf Digest's list of
America's 100 best, the George
Fazio Course offers a
stimulating challenge to avid
golfers. With only two par-5s,
the heart of the course lies in
a series of long par-4s,
beginning with the 432-yard
first hole and ending with the
462-yard 18th. The fairways are
open and roll gently on the
front nine, while the back nine
becomes tighter and more severe,
demanding good position off the
tee.
Demanding a
combination of length and
precision play, the Fazio Course
is an exhilarating layout
regarded by many as the island's
truest championship challenge.
Sixteen of the course's tees and
greens were rebuilt in the
summer of 1994 to help restore
its original excellence. In
addition, the course is
maintained in prime condition,
and walking is permitted.

Palmetto Dunes Jones
|
 |
One of Hilton
Head’s most popular courses, the
Robert Trent Jones Oceanfront
Course recently reopened from an
extensive and successful
renovation.
Completely
resurfaced greens, subtle
elevation changes, a new lake
and reshaped and restored
bunkers complement a layout that
bears the name of its designer –
Robert Trent Jones Sr. Known for
its wide fairways and expansive
greens, the course is a fair
test for golfers of all levels.
Robert
Trent Jones’ natural beauty and
challenge are highlighted by
Palmetto Dunes’ unique, winding
seven-mile lagoon system that
comes into play on 11 of the 18
holes. The memorable par-5 10th
hole -- the signature hole at
Robert Trent Jones -- is one of
only two oceanfront holes on
Hilton Head. The green, raised
slightly during the renovation,
provides stunning views of the
Atlantic Ocean that shouldn’t be
missed.

Palmetto Hall Arthur Hills
|
 |
Opened for play
in March 1991, Palmetto Hall’s
Arthur Hills Course is a
sculpted beauty with subtle
contouring, a distinctive layout
and a rare touch of genius.
Created by renowned designer
Arthur Hills, this par-72,
6,918-yard course is a graceful
masterpiece that gently flows
across the land’s naturally
rolling curves, winding through
deep thickets of moss-draped
oaks and towering pines
punctuated with sparkling lakes.
The course
is seamlessly integrated into
the natural landscape. Along
with the designer’s trademark
undulating fairways, this
heavily treed course features
protected greens, many edged
with bunkers, as well as
strategic water hazards. Most
memorable is the large lake
bordering the difficult
dogleg-left finishing hole. Four
different tee positions
comfortably accommodate any
golfer and offer four distinct,
yet always challenging, golfing
experiences.

Palmetto Hall Robert Cupp
|
 |
Opened in 1993,
the Robert Cupp Course at
Palmetto Hall redefines
conventional golf course
architecture, thanks to a boldly
original concept from the
designer. Named the 1992 Golf
Architect of the Year by
GolfWorld, Cupp plotted the
course’s original design on
computer; thus the finished
product is characterized by
straight lines, sharp angles and
unusual shapes.
Still, the
Cupp Course is extremely
flexible with sound strategic
values. While its 141 slope
rating from the tips ranks it as
one of the island’s most
demanding championship tests,
the course is eminently playable
from the forward tees. A truly
unique experience, the Cupp
course is, from a player’s
standpoint, refreshingly new and
great fun to play for all skill
levels.

Harbor Town Golf Links
|
 |
Home of the
prestigious PGA Tour Event, The
MCI Heritage, each April,
Harbour Town is perennially
ranked among the top golf
courses in the world. Good
scoring depends on finesse and
shotmaking rather than strength.
Well-placed tee shots and
approaches are requisite to good
scoring, and the well-protected
greens are among the smallest of
any tournament course in the
country.
Harbour
Town's set of par-3s rank among
the finest in the world, and its
par-4 18th hole is one of the
most feared in all of golf,
particularly when the wind is
blowing off Calibogue Sound.
Pete Dye's
crowning achievement as a golf
course designer, Harbour Town is
an innovative masterpiece and a
favorite among Tour pros. Dye
returned to oversee a complete
restoration of Harbour Town Golf
Links in 2000.

Sea Marsh
|
 |
The Sea Marsh
Course offers a variety of golf
holes and beautiful scenery that
make it both challenging and
enjoyable. Many of the 18 holes
traverse picturesque lagoons and
marshes. The broad fairways are
lined with thick stands of
pines, palmettos and moss-draped
oaks. The well-bunkered greens
are medium sized and generally
slope from back to front.
Because of this undulation,
approach shots must be
well-judged to avoid treacherous
downhill putts.
All of
these factors, in tandem with a
consistent ocean breeze, combine
to characterize the challenge of
the Sea Marsh Course. Junior
players (12 and under)
experience the Mini Marsh course
with shortened yardages
resulting in a more manageable
course.
The
original George Cobb design was
renovated by award-winning
architect Clyde Johnston and has
been awarded the certified
“Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary”
designation.
